EVANSTON, Ill. -- Coming off of its third-consecutive title at the Big Ten Match Play Championship last weekend, Northwestern returns to stroke play action Feb. 20-21 at the 12th Annual Rice Intercollegiate.
Live results will be available at Golfstat.com while live tweets from the course courtesy of head coach Pat Goss can be found by following @NUGolf_Live.
The 15-team tournament will be competed on the par-72, 7,184-yard Westwood Golf Club, which underwent major renovations in 2002 and re-opened in 2004 after a redesign by Keith Foster. Hardwood oaks, lakes and a natural ravine help shape and define the fairways and greens.
Northwestern is the lone Big Ten team in the field, which is comprised of the Wildcats and host Rice along with Air Force, Florida Gulf Coast, Houston Baptist, Houston, Kansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Missouri State, New Mexico State, Texas State, UTSA, Wichita State and Winthrop.
Northwestern is vying to become the first two-time team champion in the 12-year history of the Rice Intercollegiate after winning the team title in 2003 when Scott Harrington also claimed individual medalist honors with a 7-under 209.
Senior Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) is the reigning Big Ten Golfer of the Week following a 4-0 performance during NU's Big Ten Match Play Championship last weekend. Chien's perfect mark included a dramatic eagle-birdie come-from-behind win in the opening round against Penn State to allow the Wildcats to advance via a tiebreaker.
Sophomore Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) also netted a perfect 4-0 record at the Match Play spring-season opener including a huge 7 and 6 win against Penn State and a 6 and 4 victory in the final versus Minnesota. Junior Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) went an unbeaten 3-0-1 last weekend in his first full tournament of 2011-12 after he missed the majority of the fall with an injury. Losole opened NU's Windon Memorial with a 2-under 68 in his only stroke play tourney this year, but was forced to withdraw prior to the final round.
