STILLWATER, Okla. -- Northwestern moved up two notches in the team standings Wednesday at the NCAA National Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club, ending the second day of play in 21st position overall.

The Wildcats improved 10 strokes from Tuesday to Wednesday, carding a second-round team total of 8-over 296 to card a 36-hole score of 26-over 602 (306-296). NU is two shots behind No. 10 LSU and No. 11 Texas in a tie for 19th. NU is 12 strokes behind a two-way tie for eighth between No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 27 Ohio State. The top eight teams after tomorrow's final stroke play round advance to match play to determine the 2011 national champion.

After starting in the morning off No. 1 Tuesday, Northwestern played from No. 10 in the afternoon Wednesday. Conditions Wednesday morning were ripe for scoring, but the winds picked up and the greens firmed up by the time the Wildcats hit the course.

Junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) began a very strong day by draining a 20-foot par putt on No. 10. A birdie quickly followed at No. 11, then after six-consecutive pars, Chun made back-to-back birdies at Nos. 18 and 1 to get to 3-under par. A bogey at No. 2 put him at 2-under, then seven-straight pars concluded his round at 2-under 70 and put him 36th in the field at 3-over 147 (77-70).

Senior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) had three bogeys on his first six holes Wednesday, but he made a great Karsten Creek par save at No. 13. After hitting into the severe rough, he took an unplayable lie. His two club-length drop from that spot found him in the fairway. He then hit the green and saved his par.

Lipsky made birdie at both par 5s straddling the turn to get back to 1-over par before a couple of tough 3-putt bogeys put him right back at 3-over. Lipsky again fought back, nearly holing out his approach at No. 8 for a tap-in birdie and his second-straight 2-over 74. Lipsky is 46th individually at 4-over 148.

After struggling to a 9-over 81 on Tuesday, senior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) showed serious fight on Wednesday. Dupont was at 6-over through eight holes in the second round when he went eagle-birdie on the par-5 holes No. 18 and No. 1 to get all the way back to 3-over in the snap of a finger. Dupont stabilized at that point, making all pars except for a bogey-birdie combination on Nos. 5 and 6 to end the day at 3-over 75 and 12-over 156 (81-75) for the tournament. He is in 117th position in the standings.

Freshman Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) made a pair of quick bogeys to start his day before a birdie on the course's easiest hole, the par-5 14th. Two more bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17, however, gave him a 3-over 39 going out. Another bogey at No. 2 put him at 4-over par before he knocked his approach nice and tight for a birdie at No. 5. A bogey-bogey finish left him at 5-over 77 for the second round and 7-over 151 (74-77) for the tournament, good for 74th place.

Sophomore Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) began his day with two double-bogeys in his first four holes en route to a 10-over 82. Losole was able to play his final three holes in 2-under par with birdies at Nos. 7 and 9, setting the stage for a strong day Thursday. He is in 145th place at 19-over 163 (81-82) after 36 holes of play.

The final round of stroke play at the NCAA Championships takes place tomorrow, Thursday, June 2. Live results are available at NCAA.com while live tweets from the course courtesy of head coach Pat Goss can be found on Twitter @NUGolf_Live.
