STILLWATER, Okla. -- Northwestern concluded its 2010-11 season Thursday at the NCAA Championships, turning in a 22nd place national finish in the 30-team field at Karsten Creek Golf Club.
Northwestern finished with a 54-hole total of 42-over 906 (306-296-304), which is eight strokes better than the Wildcats' team total at the 2009 Karsten Creek NCAA Regional. NU was two shots in front of No. 5 Florida in 23rd place and one stoke behind No. 10 LSU in 21st.
NU's 22nd place finish is a seven-spot improvement on its last appearance when the Wildcats were 29th at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Senior David Lipsky's (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) final round as a Wildcat was much the same up-and-down experience as his previous two at the 2011 NCAA Championships. The senior combined seven bogeys with four birdies to shoot a 3-over 75, leaving him at 7-over 223 (74-74-75) for the tournament.
Lipsky was two-over when he made a birdie at No. 5, then he protected that birdie with a great par save at No. 6. He hit his drive on that hole into high grass and had to chop out with a lob wedge. He then hit an 8-iron to 20 feet and made a curling putt with more than four feet of break to card his four, punctuating the save with an emphatic fist pump.
Beginning with a bogey at No. 8, Lipsky made either bogey or birdie on eight-consecutive holes. He carded birdie at the 623-yard par-5 ninth, but had bogey at Nos. 10 and 11 before a birdie at No. 12. Another bogey at No. 13 preceded a 20-foot eagle attempt at No. 14 that led to a birdie. He concluded the stretch with one final bogey before parring in for his 75.
Fresh off a 2-under 70 in Wednesday's second round, junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) kept his momentum on the front nine Thursday morning. He had a bogey at No. 3, but made great par saves with up-and-downs at Nos. 6 and 7. He recovered from a second bogey at the 501-yard par-4 eighth with a birdie at the long par-5 ninth hole to turn in a 1-over 37 going out.
Chun struggled on the back side, though, making three bogeys and a double bogey before recovering for a birdie-birdie finish and a 4-over 76, matching him with Lipsky at 7-over 223 (77-70-76).
Senior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) also had a 1-over 37 on the front nine Thursday after making two bogeys and a birdie. He began the back nine with a double-bogey at No. 10 before rolling in a birdie at the 209-yard par 3 11th. Two more bogeys and five pars on the way in gave Dupont at 4-over 76 for the day and a 54-hole total of 16-over 232 (81-75-76).
Sophomore Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) had a much-improved day Thursday over his first two rounds. Though it started ominously with a double bogey and a 4-over score through five, Losole made birdie at No. 7 to turn in a 3-over 39 going out. Two bogeys and seven pars on the back nine gave him a 5-over 77 for the final round and a 24-over 240 (81-82-77) for the Championships.
Freshman Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) rounded out Northwestern's day with a 7-over 79 Thursday, hurt by a 6-over 42 on the front nine after he carded a triple-bogey eight on the par-5 ninth. Perry played the back nine at a much-better 1-over par clip, making birdie on the final hole of his first season of collegiate golf. Perry finished at 14-over 230 (74-77-79).
