Wildcats Finish Second Day of NCAA Championships at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwestern's second day of action at the 2011 NCAA Championships hosted by Minnesota came to a close Friday after senior Alex Tyler and sophomore Charlie Rimkus competed in the 400 IM.

Tyler, who on Thursday earned honorable mention All-American honors in the 200 IM for the second time in his career, finished in 19th place during the preliminary heats of the 400 IM with a time of 3:47.66. He was just over one second shy of placing in the top 16 and earning a bid in the consolation final. The effort was a four-spot improvement on a year ago in the 400 IM when Tyler took 23rd.

Rimkus came away from his 400 IM swim with a 25th-place showing, touching in a time of 3:49.77.

Senior Sean Mathews was a scratch in the 100 butterfly.

Entering Friday night's finals session, Northwestern remained in 23rd place with five team points courtesy of Tyler's 12th-place finish Thursday evening.

On Saturday, Northwestern will conclude the 2011 NCAA Championships meet with Tyler in the 200 breast and Rimkus in the 1,650 free, while Mathews is scheduled to compete as the No. 15 seed in the 200 fly.
