MINNEAPOLIS -- On the final day of his Northwestern career, senior Sean Mathews earned the first honorable mention All-American honor by placing 15th (1:44.34) in the preliminary heats of the 200-yard fly Saturday at the NCAA Championships hosted by Minnesota.
Mathews then took his place in the consolation final Saturday night, where he again swam to a 15th-place national finish with a time of 1:44.92. The effort marked a 13-place improvement over his 2010 showing at the NCAA Championships when he took 28th in the 200 fly.
In other preliminary action, senior and two-time honorable mention All-American Alex Tyler completed his Northwestern career with another excellent performance on Saturday. Tyler went out by lowering his previous career best in the 200 breaststroke by a full half-second, touching the wall in 1:56.34 to place 23rd in the nation. A year ago, Tyler had taken 31st nationally in the event.
Sophomore Charlie Rimkus also wrapped up his season with his effort in the 1,650 free, placing 28th in the event with a time of 15:31.57.
Tyler and Mathews' scoring performances at the NCAA Championships gave Northwestern seven team points, good for 30th in the team standings.
