MINNEAPOLIS -- The 2011 Big Ten Championships got underway Wednesday evening with a pair of relay events during an abbreviated session at the University Aquatic Center.
Northwestern began the 2011 Big Ten Championships with a seventh-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Dominik Cubelic (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves), Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) and Jake Grosser (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) cut 2.80 seconds from NU's seed time with an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 1:27.86, which puts the squad fifth on NU's all-time top times list in the event.
In the 800 free relay, Northwestern placed 10th with a 6:30.95 -- good for the fourth fastest NU relay in the event in program history. The team was comprised of Tyler, Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman), Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) and John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma). Frutiger's 1:36.10 anchor leg was the third fastest in the field.
