KENOSHA, Wis. -- Northwestern opened its winter quarter schedule by sweeping a quad-dual Saturday afternoon with wins over host Carthage (206-56), Lewis (197-61) and North Central College (219-21).

The Wildcats partly swam off-event against their NCAA Division II and III opponents while still capturing 13 of the 14 events.

NU kicked off the proceedings by swimming the four fastest times in the 400 medley relay. Jan Hanulik, Charlie Rimkus, Peter Park and Chase Stephens comprised the first-place time of 3:28.74. All four NU relays placed at least seven full seconds ahead of the nearest competition.

In the 1,000 free, NU butterfly specialist Sean Mathews came in second overall with a 9:33.78. Rimkus (1:42.19) then led a 1-2 sweep of the 200 free alongside Park (1:42.79).

Jake Vogel's 52.63 in the 100 back earned him a victory while Hanulik's 53.09 was good for second-place in the race. Freshman Brien Gerber then won the 100 breast with a 1:01.19.

Senior Alex Tyler emerged victorious in the 200 fly with a time of 1:53.09. Freshman Dominik Cubelic was second in 1:58.85.

Swimming his first-career meet for Northwestern, junior transfer Jake Grosser led a top-four Wildcat sweep of the 50 free with a time of 21.14. Alexander Ratajczyk, Matt Wilcox and Ross McAuliffe rounded out the winning quarter for the `Cats.

After the mid-meet break, Grosser made it 2-for-2 with a 46.77 winning time in the 100 free. He was followed by John Frutiger (47.93) in second and Hanulik (48.21) in third. Cubelic captured the 200 back in 1:55.18, coming from way behind Carthage's Kyle Drake to win by .15 of a second. Cubelic's final 27.52 50-yard split was more than a full second faster than Drake's.

Park and Gerber went 1-2 in the 200 breast with times of 2:09.97 and 2:14.62, respectively. Tyler then swam a 4:39.18 to win the 500 free. Cubelic's second win of the day came via a 52.09 in the 100 fly.

Mathews led the third top-four sweep of the afternoon for Northwestern with a 1:54.79 victory in the 200 IM. Vogel, Varun Shivakumar and Tony Mattar rounded out that winning group of `Cats.

NU capped the day with a 1:26.73 win in the 200 free relay. Grosser, Frutiger, Stephens and Daniel Salovesh swam that time for the Wildcats.

Northwestern returns to action at 5 p.m. CT Wednesday, Jan. 12, against Notre Dame at the Norris Aquatics Center. The meet marks Senior Day for NU.
