EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will celebrate Senior Day at 5 p.m. CT Wednesday afternoon when it closes its 2010-11 home schedule against Notre Dame at the Norris Aquatics Center.
The Wildcats will honor its five member senior class in a ceremony prior to the start of the meet. The 2011 senior class is comprised of Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette), Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School), Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) and Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton).
Northwestern opened its winter quarter competition schedule on Jan. 8 with three wins at a quad-dual hosted by NCAA Division III Carthage. NU went off-event with its swimmers to defeat Carthage, Division III North Central College and Division II Lewis University, moving to 7-2 on the dual-meet calendar. This came after the Wildcats traveled to Hawaii for a winter break training trip.
In the most recent College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll, Northwestern is receiving nine votes while its Wednesday opponent, Notre Dame, is earning seven. Last year against the Fighting Irish, the Wildcats came out in their first January meet and recorded eight season-best swims to defeat Notre Dame, 158.5-139.5.
Northwestern has received a boost this winter with the addition of junior sprinter Jake Grosser (St. Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) to the roster. Grosser swam two seasons at USC from 2007-09 before leaving the team, earning his bachelor's degree in political science early and then transferring to Northwestern to pursue a master's degree and compete with junior eligibility. In Grosser's first meet in purple, he won both the 50 and 100 free races at last Saturday's quad dual.
