Postgame Quotes
On rebounding from a loss to Iowa earlier in the season...
"I thought we were lethargic out there and that we didn't have the sass to win out there. We just let things happen out there and it was like throwing a counter punch. We were more aggressive tonight."
On why Northwestern didn't play a 1-3-1 zone...
"Iowa ripped it apart out there. It's hard to be aggressive in a 1-3-1. I wanted to get to the basics: guard your man and stay on your feet. They had a lot of ball screens and they did a great job popping off them. We worked pretty hard for a couple of days to get to the basics."
On Michael Thompson's condition...
"He's had a stomach illness, and it has been going around the team. Reggie Hearn, Jeremy Nash, and Michael Thompson have had it. Practices haven't been as spirited as you would like. Michael hung in there until the last two minutes and then asked to be taken out."
On why the offense worked...
"When you make shots, things work out. We had a lot of backdoor cuts; I think two in a row. Then they laid off, and we made shots. Making shots and a good offense go together. Sometimes they are open shots and guys miss those, but not tonight."
Iowa Head Coach Todd Lickliter
On Iowa winning at home and losing at Northwestern...
"[Northwestern] sure returned the favor, that's for sure. You have to give them a lot of credit for responding the way they did. That's what you would expect out of a well-coached team that has pride and came out and executed flawlessly, I thought."
On trying to come from behind...
"It's not a team or system that you want to get down to. You just do not want to try to come from behind against Northwestern. They don't turn it over, they back-door you, they're patient. It's a team that you've got to execute against early on and for whatever reason early we were not able to execute and we were not able to dictate at all defensively."
On Iowa's offense...
"We just weren't able to get the kind of movement that we needed to be able to attack. We ended up standing and we didn't shoot it well. I thought we would, we should be fresh after eight days."
On Northwestern's offensive movement...
"It's not good enough to be there against this Northwestern team. You can feel like you're in position but they're checking to see what you're looking at. If you're there, you don't discourage them. They're looking and if you're not paying attention and you're not reading the ball they're going to throw it by you and that's what they were doing tonight."
On Iowa's 3-point shooting...
"I think they did a really good job of contesting [the 3-point shot]. There were times that we may have missed some open ones but at 3 of 21 [3-pointers], you're going to be hard-pressed to win with that."
On the game overall...
"We struggled to defend, we threw it away and we didn't shoot it very well, that's pretty much a formula for what happened."
