EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern begins its spring schedule this weekend, Feb. 12-13, at the Big Ten Match Play Championship at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla.

The Wildcats are the No. 6 seed for the event, which features all 11 Big Ten schools in their first action of the spring season. NU opens the event against No. 11 seed Wisconsin Friday morning, with the winner advancing to play No. 3 seed Michigan Friday afternoon. The format for the tournament (in the winner's bracket) is similar to Big Ten Tournaments in basketball. For a complete bracket, download the .pdf at the top of this page.

Each team will consist of six golfers paired against an opponent from the opposing team for that match. A match is comprised of 18 holes of match play, with each individual victory worth one team point and ties worth a half-point. Three and a half points will be necessary to win the team match.

Northwestern put together a 3-1 record at last year's Big Ten Match Play Championship, which was the inaugural incarnation of the event. That mark was good enough for a fifth-place finish. Then freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) was dominant at the tournament, making 20 birdies and just three bogies over 56 holes of play.

Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) will play the No. 1 spot for the Wildcats this year, followed by David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) in No. 2, Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), Chun, Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) and freshman Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame).

The beautiful Heron Bay Country Club, home to the PGA Tour's Honda Classic for six years (1997-2002), will host the Big Ten Match Play Championship for the second-straight year. Heron Bay is a par-72 layout that plays to 7,268 yards from the back tees. It also hosts the prestigious Dixie Classic Amateur and VH1 Save the Music Celebrity Golf Classic.
