EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern surrendered a pair of goals to Northern Illinois off of set pieces as the Wildcats saw their three-match winning streak come to an end in a 2-0 loss Wednesday evening at Lakeside Field.
"We gave them a lot of chances on set pieces and they took advantage of them," Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan said. "No question, they were the better team tonight.
"We didn't do enough to win the game. This game is very humbling one day and exhilarating the next. We'll get back to work and get ready for Penn State on Sunday."
After playing a very physical game on Sunday in a 2-1 win over 15th-ranked Ohio State Sunday where just six fouls were called, a whopping 36 combined fouls were called in a not nearly as physical contest Wednesday night. The continual stoppages made it very difficult for either team to find a rhythm.
One of Northwestern's best chances in the contest came just over 11 minutes in when turned and took a swing on a shot, but NIU keeper Jordan Godsey made a diving save.
The Huskies got on the board just over six minutes later when Mino Kayser served a long free kick and connected with Mike Mascitti at the back post to give the guests a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats' scoring chances were limited in the contest, but Matt Eliason nearly knotted the score in the 63rd minute when he corralled a loose ball in the box and fired a shot on goal, but Godsey made a diving stop going to his right to allow Northern Illinois to maintain the lead.
The Huskies would add a huge insurance goal at 80:53 following a corner kick as Finn Jor headed home his first goal of the season off assists from Kayser and Luis Mojica.
NIU had a 15-9 edge in shots and each team recorded five corner kicks. Drew Kotler made five saves for Northwestern before giving way to Tommy Tombridge for the final eight-plus minutes of the match.
Northwestern returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday as it hosts Penn State at Lakeside Field. Tickets are available at the site prior to the contest.
