EVANSTON, Ill. - Penn State scored 39 minutes into the contest, but Kyle Schickel and Northwestern answered just 41 seconds later as the teams fought to a well-played 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. Schickel's goal was his second of the season.
The Nittany Lions' high-powered offense came into the match tied for the Big Ten lead with an average of 2.33 goals per game, but the Wildcats were able to hold them in check, limiting the visitors to just four shots on goal.
However, under a minute later, Hertzog was able to put one in just under the crossbar for his 13th tally of the season exactly 39 minutes into the match.
The Wildcats bounced right back off the deck, though. Schickel finished at the back post off assists from Scott Lakin and Piero Bellizzi to get Northwestern back to even just 41 seconds after Penn State's score.
Penn State was able to possess the ball for long periods of time during the second half, but the NU defense was up to the task, preventing the Nittany Lions from posting any quality scoring chances.
The Wildcats had an outstanding chance with four minutes left in regulation. On a counter attack, Schickel played a perfect through ball to Matt Eliason, but the senior forward's shot missed high.
In the first overtime period, Northwestern had a chance in the box less than two minutes in, but it was unable to get a shot off in a scrum. The Wildcats would finish with four shots in the two extra sessions while Penn State had two.
The Wildcats held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks, but was out-shot 18-13 in the match. Eliason paced Northwestern with seven shots, including four on goalDrew Kotler made three saves for NU.
Northwestern returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday as it makes the short trip to Loyola Chicago.
