PHILADELPHIA -- Overcoming sloppy weather and an eleventh-hour venue change, Northwestern women's soccer put together a strong team effort Friday to defeat Penn, 2-1.
The 'Cats got on the board at the 17:12 mark of the first half. Alicia Herczeg (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) took advantage of a scramble in front of the net after a Northwestern (2-3-1) corner kick to slam home her second goal of the season.
NU enjoyed a 1-0 advantage until the 81:34 mark, when sophomore Emily Langston (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) recorded the first game-winning goal of her career. Kay Sampson (San Francisco, Calif./Drew School) picked up the assist after serving a ball from the end line that was blocked, but bounced to Langston who found the back of the net.
Penn (2-1-0) got a goal from Kristin Kaiser in the 88th minute to create the final margin.
"We played well in some tough conditions," said Northwestern Head Coach Stephanie Erickson. "We created many chances and had a solid defensive effort. We are disappointed about giving up a late goal but feel great about earning the result."
Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made three saves in the victory, the second-consecutive win for Northwestern.
The match was moved to Vidas Field on the campus of Drexel University after heavy rain rendered Penn's home pitch unplayable. Constant rain throughout the contest made for extremely slick conditions on the synthetic surface.
Northwestern is back in action Sunday when the 'Cats face Yale in a 12 p.m. CT match in New Haven, Conn. NU returns to Lakeside Field on Thur., Sept. 17 to host BYU at 6 p.m. Admission and parking are free for all regular season home matches.
