NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Kendall Thoreson (Seattle, Wash./King's) scored the first goal of her collegiate career, lifting Northwestern women's soccer to a 1-0 win at Yale Sunday.
The freshman broke a scoreless tie in the 71st minute. Sophomore defender Nicole Duller (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) picked up the assist after making a run forward into the attacking half. Duller made a nice feed to Thoreson, who dribbled across the field and launched a rocket from 25 yards out that lofted over the Bulldog keeper and into the net.
The victory is the third straight for Northwestern (3-3-1), which went undefeated on its two-game East Coast trip. It was also NU's second straight win over a previously unbeaten Ivy League opponent.
"It's huge for our program to go 2-0 on the road," said Northwestern Head Coach Stephanie Erickson. "Today was another tough game and we had to grind it out. Kendall scored a clutch goal and we finished the game much better today."
Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made three saves in the win and recorded her third clean sheet of the season.
The 'Cats outshot Yale (3-1), 14-10, in the contest. NU put four shots on goal in the match, two from Thoreson and one each from Jennifer Baumann (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and Sarah NeSmith (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos).
Northwestern returns to action on Thursday when the 'Cats host BYU at Lakeside Field. The match has a special 6 p.m. start time. Admission and parking are free for all regular season home games.
