College Football Hall of Famer Steve Reid, 94, Dies Saturday

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Steve Reid, a former Northwestern guard from 1934-36, captain of the 1936 Big Ten championship team and member of the College Football Hall of Fame, died Saturday morning at the age of 94.
Reid was a three-year letter winner for the Wildcats, earning first-team All-America honors in 1936. He was a charter member of the Northwestern Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984 in addition to being a 1985 inductee into the College Football Hall.
Reid played in the East-West Shrine Game and, in 1961, was named to Sports Illustrated's "Silver Anniversary" All-America football team. During World War II he served as a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was awarded the Presidential Citation with three battle stars.
Reid became Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Evanston Hospital, and Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University. He was a longtime Wildcat team physician starting in 1950, and earned national recognition by conducting a football helmet study which measures intensities of impacts in order to reduce head and neck injuries.
Visitation is 3-9 p.m. today (Monday) at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner St., Des Plaines. Funeral mass is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Church, 1280 Prospect Ave., Des Plaines. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston.
