WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- After starting the day 12 shots out of 10th place, Northwestern almost managed to close the gap by firing the second lowest round of the day - an 8-under 280. The 'Cats finished 11th in the field of 14 at the Boilermaker Invitational held at the par 72, 7,079-yard Kampen Course.
Northwestern finished with an 8-over 872 (296-296-280) overall, just two shots behind Iowa and 22 shots ahead of Xavier University. Kent State won the tournament after firing a 15-under 273 in the final round to finish at 22-under overall.
Four of the five Wildcats shot below par on the day to contribute to the 8-under 280 overall score. Not only was this the second lowest round of the day, but also the third lowest of the tournament.
Senior Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) moved up six places on the day to lead the 'Cats with a fifth place finish. He shot a 4-under 68 to finish with a 6-under 210 (71-71-68). Indiana's Jorge Campillo won the individual title with a 15-under 201 (63-68-70).
After starting the day in 30th, sophomore David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) moved up to 17th after firing a 2-under 70 to finish even-par for the tournament with a 216 (71-75-70).
Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) finished with a 225 (73-77-75) in a tie for 57th.
Senior Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) and sophomore Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) both shot 1-under 71's in the final round. They finished 60th and 63rd, respectively.
The Wildcats next return to action at the Big Ten Championships, which will be held in East Lansing, Michigan April 25-27.
