Kyle Bubolz Wins Big Ten Title in 50 Freestyle

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) won his fourth-career individual Big Ten championship Thursday night, beating out teammate Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija) for the crown in the 50 freestyle.
Bubolz's time of 19.64 was the senior's career-best in the event, giving him a low NCAA `B' provisional qualifying standard and a .05 of a second edge over Barbic's second-place effort of 19.69. Both swimmers had turned in identical `B' cuts of 19.66 during the preliminary heats.
Bubolz's other three individual conference titles have come in the 100 fly, an event he will attempt to win for a fourth time Friday night. No swimmer ever has won the Big Ten 100 fly championship in four-consecutive years. Prior to Bubolz's win in the 50 free Thursday evening, 2007 graduate Matt Grevers had won the event the previous four seasons, making Bubolz's win the fifth-straight year NU has captured the crown.
As a team, Northwestern is in fifth place at the meet with 149 total points, four points ahead of sixth-place Purdue and 32 points behind fourth-place Minnesota. Michigan holds a whopping 94-point cushion as the meet's leader after day one.
Thursday morning's preliminary portion of the Big Ten Championships:
Northwestern qualified three swimmers for a pair of championship heats during Thursday morning preliminary action at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Contrary to prior seasons, the Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships are employing a new scoring system in 2008, similar to the one used by the Southeastern Conference in 2007. There will be three scoring finals of six swimmers each, meaning only the top six after preliminary heats are eligible to win the Big Ten title, but 18 total swimmers will score in each event instead of the traditional 16.
Junior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) cruised into the championship final in the 500 free, easing his way to an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying standard of 4:21.71 that cut just .01 of a second off his seed time and left him sixth after the morning session. Senior Daniel Walls (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) took second in his heat with a season-best time of 4:30.20 to finish 33rd overall. Right behind Walls was freshman Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) in 36th place with a season-best 4:30.75 (36th) to lead the remaining contingent of four other Wildcats who competed in the event.
Junior Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) was Northwestern's top finisher in the 200 IM, turning in a season-best 1:50.17 to finish in the No. 30 position. Sophomore Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton) cut more than three seconds off his seed time to finish in the No. 40 spot, with his time of 1:51.57 moving him into second on NU's top-times list in the event for the season.
In the 50 free, Bubolz and Barbic finished with identical season-best and NCAA `B' cuts of 19.66 to tie for first place after the preliminary heats.
Finishing just .11 of a second out of the scoring spots was freshman Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), whose time of 20.35 was good for 25th place overall and moved him into third on Northwestern's top times list in the event on the season.
In 1-meter diving prelims, senior Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) ended up 16th overall and junior Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) was 17th to both score points for the 'Cats. McIntosh had a score of 270.00 while Kiaie scored a 263.50.
Thursday evening's finals portion of the Big Ten Championships:
Northwestern kicked off Thursday night's finals session with an NCAA `B' cut of 1:19.20 in the 200 free relay, getting the time from the team of Nilsson, Barbic, Kerr and Bubolz to finish in fourth place.
Nilsson took sixth place in the championship final of the 500 free, turning in a time of 4:26.59 to earn 18 points for the 'Cats. No Northwestern swimmers were in the scoring finals of the 200 IM.
Following the Bubolz and Barbic show in the 50 free, Northwestern's 400 medley relay team of Nilsson, John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep), Bubolz and Barbic took fifth with an NCAA `B' standard of 3:13.45, just .25 of a second behind fourth-place Ohio State.
