Three NCAA 'B' Cuts Keep NU In TYR Invitational Lead

EVANSTON, Ill. -- After entering the second day of the three-day TYR Invitational with a slim four-point lead against second-place Michigan State, the Wildcats opened up a 63-point cushion over the Spartans following Saturday's events at the Norris Aquatics Center.
Northwestern now has 879 points to Michigan State's 816, while Kenyon College sits in third place with a two-day total of 553 points.
The day began very well for the Spartans, who broke the Northwestern pool record in the 200 medley relay with an NCAA `B' time of 1:27.85. The Wildcats came in second with a 1:31.03 put together by Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney), John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep), Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) and Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids).
In the 400 IM, senior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) won the super final with an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 3:50.98 after also swimming a `B' cut of 3:51.57 in the prelims. Teammate Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) was second with a 3:55.03 while Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) took fourth in the super heat with a 4:05.46.
Freshman John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) won the consolation final for NU with a 4:05.51.
In the 100 fly, Chris Doman (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Charles Prep (Columbus, Ohio)) and Franklin represented NU in the super final, with Doman taking third in 49.98 and Franklin earning fourth in 50.77. Mathews won the consolation final with an effort of 49.48 while Truman Liang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hunter College High School) won the bonus final with a 51.23.
In the 200 free, Nilsson took down his own pool record and swam an NCAA `B' cut with a 1:34.84 in the prelims before winning the super final with a 1:35.76. Beckman was second with a 1:39.27, nearly 4.5 seconds behind the blazing Nilsson. Frutiger also participated in the super final, picking up fourth with a 1:40.52 for NU.
Franklin's third-place super final finish in the 100 breast with a 55.84 was tops for Northwestern, with Tyler earning NU's best point total in the consolation final with a third-place (seventh overall) effort of 57.61.
The 100 back again saw the Wildcats' lone super final participant take third, this time behind Beckman's 50.98. Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton) and Kyle O'Brien (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau Douglas) swept the top two spots in the consolation final with times of 51.96 and 52.76, respectively.
After crushing the field in the 1-meter event Friday, senior diver Alex Kiaie repeated his feat with a 334.65 to win the 3-meter board on Saturday, this time withstanding a tough challenge from Michigan State's David Garry, who was second with a 327.30.
In the 800 free relay, Northwestern swam another NCAA `B' cut, this time turning in a first-place effort of 6:36.17. The team of Frutiger, Nilsson, Tyler and Beckman won the race and gave the Wildcats their first NCAA relay cut of the year.
The TYR Invitational concludes tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 23, with preliminary heats at 9 a.m. and finals at 3 p.m. at the Norris Aquatics Center.
