EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Kay Sampson scored on a header from 10-yards out off a cross from Sam Greene to give the Wildcats a 2-1 win over the Indiana Hoosiers Sunday at Lakeside Field. Senior Jenny Dunn scored her third goal of the season to give NU a 1-0 lead and Sampson broke a 1-1 tie at 86:26.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 7-6-1, 2-3 in the Big Ten. Indiana falls to 5-10-0, 0-6 in conference.
Dunn was all over the field as NU put on early pressure, recording a quick two shots, including a sharp-angle attempt that rolled wide. The senior scored an unassisted tally at 26:08 when she managed to beat her defender to have a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Dunn's shot hit the cross bar when it deflected down to the ground, it crossed the goal line to give the senior her third goal of the year and 16th of her career. Dunn forced another save late in the first half, but the opening frame ended scoreless.
After a corner kick by NU early in the second half, Indiana served the ball forward and Devon Beach had just keeper Carolyn Edwards in front of her. She put it in to tie the game at 1-1.
The late stages of the second half saw both teams making substitutions to try to get the players on the field to break the tie. The decision that proved to be the decisive one was when Sampson made her first appearance in the game at 78:29.
Several minutes later, in the 87th minute, Greene got deep in the Indiana end and served a cross from the end line into the box. The 5-9 Sampson used all of her height to power a header into the Indiana goal for her first goal of the season and second of her career.
Sampson's other career goal was a game-tying goal last season as time was expiring in regulation against Colgate.
Indiana forced Edwards to make a save off the kickoff following the goal as the sophomore punched the ball up and over the cross bar after Indiana tried to use a Lakeside Field bounce to tie the score. NU fended off back-to-back corner kicks to secure the victory.
Indiana took 13 shots to 11 for NU and each team made four saves and had five corner kicks. Edwards made three saves to pick up the victory. Dunn led NU with four shots and two on goal while Alicia Herczeg took three.
Northwestern returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday against Michigan State. It will be the start of NU's final home weekend. The 'Cats host Michigan on Senior Day at 3 p.m. Sunday in a game that will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
