EVANSTON, Ill. -- Michigan State used three first-half goals to defeat the Wildcats Friday night at Lakeside Field, 3-0. Northwestern returns to action at 3 p.m. Sunday against Michigan. The Senior Day contest will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 7-7-1, 2-4 in the Big Ten. Michigan State improves to 13-3, 5-2 in conference.
Northwestern had the first couple of opportunities in the opening minutes of the game, notching two corner kicks and shots by Amanda Hoffman and Jeanette Lorme that missed the mark.
The Spartans took advantage of a miscue to take a 1-0 lead at 08:18. It was Laura Heyboer -- the nation's leading goal-scorer's -- first of two goals on the game.
Michigan State took a 2-0 lead at 30:09 and after Carolyn Edwards made a save several minutes later, the Spartans found the net for the third time in the first half to take a 3-0 lead. It was Heyboer's nation-leading 18th goal of the year.
Emily Langston forced a save late in the half, but the Spartans took the three-goal advantage into the half.
Sophomore Grace Weitz took over in goal for the second half and made three saves in her collegiate debut. She stopped Heyboer twice in the first few minutes. Although no more goals were scored in the game, the second half saw both teams taking plenty of shots as the teams each took six in each half and both made three saves in the second half.
Despite forcing three Spartan saves in the second half, the Wildcats could not get on the scoreboard and fell 3-0.
Sam Greene and Hoffman each had three shots to lead NU. Lorme, Atkinson, Hoffman, Langston and Greene all forced saves. Northwestern took five corner kicks to three for MSU and the shots were even at 12.
The Wildcats return to action at 3 p.m. Sunday against Michigan at Lakeside Field. It will be the final regular-season home game for NU's four seniors: Jenny Dunn, Amanda Hoffman, Laura Janowitsch and Jeanette Lorme. They will be honored before the game and the match will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
