LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A three-set loss and two by tiebreakers marred Northwestern's hard-fought performance at Louisville Friday night, resulting in a 6-1 defeat in its first road trip this season.
Playing at the No.-1 position for the second time in three matches, Alexander Thams (Stockholm, Sweden/Enskilda Gymnasiet) had to bow out due to injury in the second set of his match, setting the Cardinals up with its second point of the day after sweeping the doubles points.
Junior Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) lost a heartbreaking match 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 (12-10) at No. 2. Neither freshman Peter Rispoli (Naples, Fla. (St. Stephen's (Texas)) or senior Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico) faired much better in the tiebreakers. Both fell in straight sets, but not before forcing a extra tennis in all four of their combined sets.
Sophomore captain Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) overpowered Tye Myers 6-2, 6-3 for the 'Cats only victory of the day. It was his third of the season in as many tries.
"They played real hard," head coach Arvid Swan said. "We just lost a bunch of close matches, but I'm really proud of the way they fought."
Northwestern looks to rebound with a match on Sunday at Ball State.
