TUCSON, Ariz. -- - For the second consecutive tournament, and the fourth time in his last five events, Northwestern's Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) has posted a top-20 finish, placing 16th at Arizona's National Invitational Tournament in Tucson. As a team, the Wildcats finished 11th in the 15-team field, which included seven top-25 clubs.
Wilson, who has placed 11th, 12th, 16th and 16th in four of his last five tournaments, finished 1-under (69-74-72=215) for the two-day event. Wilson's final-round 72 consisted of three birdies, 13 pars, one bogey and one double bogey (on his last hole).
Junior Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto), the other half of the "Dublin Duo," finished Tuesday's round with a 1-over 73 and was even-par (70-73-73=216) for the tournament. He placed 23rd overall.
Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek), David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) and Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) placed 64th, 68th and 74th, respectively. Doyle carded a 75 on Tuesday to finish 9-over (78-72-75=225). Merkow was 12-over (72-79-77=228) and Bowers was 16-over (74-77-81=232).
In the team race, Arizona State held off defending NIT champion UCLA to win this year's tournament by eight strokes. The Wildcats, ranked 37th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, placed ahead of Texas, Pepperdine, Kent State and Arizona's "B" squad. Arizona State's Niklas Lemke won the individual race with a 9-under 207, besting teammate Benjamin Alvarado and Tulsa's Ryan Henry by a stroke.
Northwestern wastes little time returning to the golf course, playing in this weekend's Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
