WAYZATA, Minn. -- Northwestern, ranked 24th in the preseason Golfweek poll, fired the second-best team round of the day (13-over 301) and finished seventh at the Gopher Invitational. The Wildcats started the day in ninth place.
Freshman Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) continued his strong tournament and placed in a seventh-place tie with Minnesota's Niall Turner. Bowers carded a 5-over 221 (77-70-74) and finished seven strokes back of Stanford's Zack Miller and SMU's Colt Knost, who were 2-under for the tournament.
Stanford edged the host Golden Gophers by five strokes to win the tournament.
Northwestern's Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) shot the Wildcats' best third-round score -- an even-par 72. That lifted him into 17th place with a 10-over 226 (79-75-72).
Senior David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) placed 28th with a 14-over 230 (76-77-77).
