EAST LANSING, Mich. -- After a slow start, junior Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and the 26th-ranked Wildcats got their game rolling in the second round to help Northwestern put itself in position to win another tournament.
The Wildcats, who are coming off a first-place finish at last weekend's Kepler Intercollegiate, shot a 4-under 284 in the second round to climb to third place, just six strokes back of Indiana. Illinois is in second place, two strokes in front of the Wildcats.
Wilson, David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) and Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) all turned in under-par second rounds. Wilson, who is tied for the individual lead at 6-under with Denver's Charlie Soule, carded rounds of 70 and 68. Wilson and Soule are four strokes in front of three players who are tied for third at 2-under.
Merkow, who struggled in the opening round with his first 80 of the season. came back with a 5-under 67 in the second round to climb from 56th place to 16th place. He is 3-over (80-67=147) after 36 holes.
Coming off his Kepler title, Moore is in 16th place, as well, with a 3-over 147 (76-71).
Senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) is in 47th place at 9-over (75-78=153) and sophomore Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) is 58th at 12-over (76-80=156).
The tournament can be followed live at Fossum Invitational.
