EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) -- Tim Doyle's 17 points and eight assists led Northwestern as the Wildcats dominated from the start in a 64-40 win over Brown on Tuesday night.

Kevin Coble added 11 points for Northwestern (2-2), which held at least a 16-point lead for much of the game and saw Doyle on the court for 35 minutes.

"It was a good night for him and he should play like that all the time," Northwestern head coach Bill Carmody said of Doyle.

Brown (1-4) played without 6-foot 9 junior forward Mark MacDonald, Chris Skrelja and Damon Huffman, all out to due to injury.

Bears head coach Craig Robinson had been an assistant at Northwestern for five years under Carmody before landing the job at Brown earlier this year, and Doyle said he felt anxious about playing Brown because the strategy was likely to be similar to the Wildcats'.

"I was really nervous going into the game because I knew we were going to be playing against a version of us," Doyle said.

As Northwestern built a 36-18 halftime lead, the game had shadows of the Nov. 11 Cornell game, when the Wildcats let an early lead slip away for a 64-61 loss to the Big Red. But Tuesday the Wildcats held Brown to 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) shooting in the second half and never trailed.

The Bears' Marcus Becker was the one thorn in Northwestern's side with a game-high five steals. Mark McAndrew led Brown with a team-high 10 points while Matt Mullery had a game-high eight rebounds and nine points for the Bears.

Robinson said the game was a case of the teacher schooling the pupil.

"We didn't come ready to play," he said. "Our guys are still learning."
