GLENCOE, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's golf team, ranked 30th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, battled the challenging conditions at Skokie Country Club on Monday and finished in a tie for seventh place at 55-over (306-291-310=907).
On a day where high winds made an already difficult golf course even tougher, the Wildcats shot a final-round 310 in their season's lone home event. Southern Methodist shot the only round of less than 10-over par (7-over 291) to run away with the team crown by 14 strokes over second-place Kansas.
The Mustangs' Colt Knost held off a charge by Kansas' Zach Pederson, who shot a tournament-best round of 5-under 66, to make it a clean sweep of titles for SMU. Knost finished the tournament with a 2-under 211 (70-70-71) by shooting an even-par 71 on Monday.
Four 'Cats finished the event closely packed together. David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) led the 'Cats with a 17th-place finish at 12-over 225 (75-72-78).
Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) earned a tie for 19th at 14-over (76-70-81=227); Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) completed the tournament in a tie for 24th at 16-over (79-74-76=229); and Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) came in with a 17-over total (76-75-79=230) to finish in a tie for 30th.
Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) continued his improvement throughout the course of the tournament, shooting a final-round 77 to earn a tie for 46th at 23-over (81-78-77=236).
The Wildcats are back in action Oct. 23-24 when they take part in the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge in Bandon, Ore.
