CHAMPAIGN, ILL. -- Illinois edged Northwestern 3-2 in Friday's Big Ten Conference opener. The loss -- only NU's second of the season -- drops the Wildcats to 7-2, (0-1 Big Ten) and snaps a six-match winning streak. Illinois improves to 5-2-2 (1-0).
The Illini jumped out to a 2-0 lead early, tallying goals at the 9:05 and 14:37 marks. But the Wildcats clawed closer right before halftime, when freshman forward Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) took a cross from fellow classmate Jeanette Lorme (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) and found the net from about three yards out at 38:23. Lorme's assist was her third in the past two matches.
Dunn struck again in the second half, this time on an assist from Kelly Sitkowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant). The sophomore fed Dunn on the left side of the field from about 10 yards out at 53:29 to record what proved to be NU's final score of the match. With the assist, Sitkowski now is NU's leader with four. Dunn's goals were her fourth and fifth of the season, which ties her for the team lead. She has scored three goals in the past two matches.
Northwestern seeks to even its conference record on Sunday against Iowa. The Wildcats travel to Iowa City for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
