IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Wildcats put two goals on the board early, but it was not enough for the victory as NU tied Iowa, 2-2, on Sunday. With the tie, Northwestern is now 7-2-1, 0-1-1 on the year.
Northwestern jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a free kick by junior Katie Wright (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) just 2:13 into the match. After an Iowa foul, Wright blasted a free kick from over 30 yards and freshman goalkeeper Erin MacIsaac pushed the ball on to the crossbar. The ball then bounced off the crossbar and into the goal off of MacIsaac's back.
Freshman Jeanette Lorme (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) netted the Wildcats' second score at the 12:19 mark. The midfielder fired a rebound shot into the net off MacIsaac's hands. With the goal, Lorme now has three scores on the season.
Iowa answered in the 30th minute after Katelyn Quinn volleyed in a shot inside the 18-yard box. Kelsey Shaw settled the ball with a header into the box and Quinn shot the ball through traffic into the net.
The Hawkeyes netted the equalizer in the 53rd minute off of a free kick. Whitney Strain fired the kick into the box and Quinn flicked a header directly to Melisa Kaetterhenry, who beat Whitney Jones (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) to tie the match.
Jones recorded 10 saves in the match.
"I think we fought really hard the whole game," head coach Jenny Haigh said. "But we didn't compete for 90 minutes."
Northwestern hosts Penn State on Friday, Sept. 30. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
