EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern gave the No. 35 San Diego Toreros all they could handle Friday afternoon, but came up just short, 5-2. The 'Cats are now 6-9 overall and remain at 1-2 in the Big Ten.
In the doubles competition to start the day, seniors Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) won at No. 1, but two close losses at the No. 2 and 3 spots handed the Toreros the team point.
Perrin and junior Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) each recorded singles victories. Both won their third-set tiebreakers for the match.
Northwestern returns to Evanston to reopen Big Ten play Saturday and Sunday, April 2 and 3, against Indiana and Penn State. The 'Cats will only face Big Ten competition from there on out.
