RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- With 18 holes remaining in the Puerto Rico Classic, Northwestern is hoping it saved its best for last as the Wildcats are sitting in 16th place at the 18-team tournament.
Last week, at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, the Wildcats posted their best 18-hole score on the final day. Northwestern needs to duplicate last week's third-round effort if it wants to climb in the team standings.
Third-ranked Georgia Tech shot a 10-under 278 on Monday to move four strokes ahead of Florida. Top-ranked Oklahoma State is in third place, followed by Arizona State and Georgia. The Wildcats are tied with Michigan at 31-over, and are three strokes behind Illinois.
Freshman Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) recorded the Wildcats' best second-round score -- a 3-over 75 to move into 56th place after 36 holes. He 7-over (76-75=151) for the tournament. Sophomore Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) is in 63rd place at 8-over (75-77=152).
Junior Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) dropped back to 75th place after carding a 12-over 84 following his 2-under 70 on Sunday.
Eight of the 18 teams in the Puerto Rico Classic are ranked 19th or higher nationally.
The third and final round is set for Tuesday.
