RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- Playing against several of the nation's top golf programs, including the nation's top three-ranked teams as well as the country's preseason No. 1 team, Northwestern is in 15th place (out of 18 teams) after the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic.
Junior Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) led the Wildcats on the first day, shooting a 2-under 70. He is in 13th place, five shots behind Florida's James Vargas. The Gators, who won last week's Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship and were the nation's top-ranked preseason team, are one shot behind No. 2 Georgia. Oklahoma State, presently ranked No. 1 in the nation, is in fifth place, four shots off the lead.
Sophomore Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), who is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Mercedes-Benz event, fired a 3-over 75 on Sunday and is in 51st place. Freshman Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) is in 66th place after firing a 4-over 76.
The second round continues Monday.
