Northwestern Men's Hoops Falls To Iowa, 64-54

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Adam Haluska scored 20 points and Greg Brunner added 16 as Iowa beat Northwestern 64-54 Saturday night.
Jeff Horner finished with 11 points as Iowa (16-7, 4-6 Big Ten) got its first win after consecutive losses to Michigan State and Wisconsin.
Vedran Vukusic had 11 points to lead the Wildcats, which had back-to-back wins over Purdue and Minnesota before Saturday's loss. Tim Doyle came off the bench to contribute 10.
Iowa led 39-26 at halftime, but Northwestern (11-12, 4-7) scored nine straight points to start the second half to cut the margin to 39-35.
The Hawkeyes responded with a 13-2 run that began with two Mike Henderson baskets. Haluska converted a 3-point play after he was fouled driving to the basket, and freshman center Alex Thompson contributed three points during the stretch.
Horner brought the crowd to its feet with a 3-pointer that gave Iowa a 52-37 lead with 10:59 to play.
The Hawkeyes stayed in control the rest of the way, never allowing the Wildcats to come closer than 10 points.
The Iowa win was the first for the Hawkeyes in three games after Coach Steve Alford dismissed leading scorer Pierre Pierce from the team on Feb 2.
On Thursday, Pierce was arraigned on charges he assaulted a former girlfriend at her West Des Moines residence. He was released from custody that afternoon. A preliminary hearing was tentatively set for Feb. 21.
