EVANSTON, Ill.-- Despite outplaying the Spartans for most of the game, the Northwestern women's soccer team fell victim to another late goal, losing to Michigan State, 2-1, today in East Lansing, Mich.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 7-6-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the Big Ten while the Spartans improve to 8-3-3 and 4-1 in conference play.
Northwestern outshot Michigan State, 10-5, but aren't getting the kind of results offensively that head coach Jenny Haigh and the team need to get them over the hump.
"It was obviously a tough game today," Haigh said. "We've played very well the last couple of weekends, but we're struggling to find a result. We're just not able to keep the ball out of the back of our net. We're certainly dangerous enough and dominating teams offensively, we just can seem to get a shutout or keep the ball out of the back of our net."
After trailing, 1-0, at halftime, Kelsey Hans (So., Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) tied the game in the 76th minute off a corner play with an assist from Jeanette Lorme (Fr., Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus).
The goal is Hans' sixth of the season and gives her 21 for her career, putting her in second place all by herself on NU's career goals list, eight behind Stephanie Erickson (29, 1994-97).
But Michigan State knocked in the game-winner five minutes later when Emma Harris recorded her second goal of the game in the 81st minute.
All six of NU's defeats have been by one goal, keeping coach Haigh optimistic that her team can still turn things around with four conference games remaining, all of which are at home.
"Both games this weekend, Kelsey Hans and Tabitha Lowey (Sr., Peachtree City, Ga./Mcintosh) gave really inspiring efforts out there," Haigh said. "Laura Janowitsch (Fr., Grafton, Wis./Grafton) has played very well in the back and Jeanatte Lorme has been consistent for us in the midfield. So there are some bright spots and we know our backs are up against the wall. We're looking forward to coming out and fighting more next weekend."
Northwestern returns home next weekend when they take on Indiana at 4 p.m. Friday and Purdue at 1 p.m. Sunday.
