EVANSTON, Ill.-- Krystal Patterson's (Fr., St. Louis, Mo./Shiloh) first half goal proved to be all the Wildcats needed as the Northwestern women's soccer team used a solid defensive effort to defeat the Indiana Hoosiers, 1-0, today, snapping its four-game losing skid in the process.
The win improves Northwestern to 8-6-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the Big Ten with three conference games remaining. Indiana drops to 5-5-2 and 1-5 in the Big Ten.
Patterson scored the games only goal in the 24th minute when Jeanette Lorme (Fr., Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) found her out in front breaking away from the pack. Patterson kept possession of the ball until the very last minute and fired it into the left side of the goal past IU goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro.
The goal was Patterson's second of the season while Lorme notched her team-leading sixth assist of the season.
Immediately after the goal, Patterson was replaced for an extra defensive player in the Wildcat backline. The move by Haigh paid dividends as the extra defender helped keep the Hoosier front line at bay for the remainder of the game.
"(Scoring the first goal) allowed us to take a forward off the front line and give us an extra person in the back for a little bit more defensive power," Haigh said. "It allowed us a little bit more insurance defensively. We did a good job winning balls and staying disciplined and putting good pressure on the ball."
With the extra defender, Indiana struggled to get a clean shot off as the Wildcat back line smothered almost every scoring chance IU had. Whitney Jones (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) recorded four saves on the day and moved into sole possession of second place on NU's all-time shutout list with 14.
Kelsey Hans (So., Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) nearly notched her seventh goal of the season several times as three of her shots were turned away by the IU keepers. In the first half, Hans appeared to have a clean break away scoring opportunity until she was denied by a diving Fabbro who took the ball right off Hans' foot 20 feet in front of the goal.
Northwestern outshot Indiana, 18-16, and held a narrow 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Haigh and the Wildcats will look to make it two straight against No. 23 Purdue Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
