EVANSTON, Ill.--A late goal in the 87th minute by Michigan's Judy Coffman broke a 2-2 tie and handed the Northwestern women's soccer team its fourth one-goal defeat in five games as the Wolverines defeated the Wildcats, 3-2, tonight in Big Ten action under the lights in front of 933 spectators in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The loss drops NU to 0-4-1 in the Big Ten and 7-5-1 overall while UM improves to 2-3-3 in the Big Ten and 6-4-2 overall.

With NU down, 2-1, with 16 minutes left in the second half, freshman Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) found fellow classmate Alex Covington (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) on a cross as Covington knocked in the goal while falling to the ground to tie the game.

But just when it appeared the game might be headed to overtime, Coffman fired in a shot past Wildcat goalkeeper Whitney Jones (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) from 12 yards out for the game-winner with an assist from Melissa Dobbyn with 3:41 left to play.

The Wildcats tried desperately to notch another goal and send it to overtime, but were unable to get a shot past the UM defense.

Katie Wright (Jr., Greenwood, Ind./Center rove) scored the first goal of the game in the 19th minute of play when she headed in a corner from Jeanette Lorme (Fr., Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) to give Northwestern the 1-0 lead.

Less than four minutes later, Michigan struck back when Brenna Mulholland fed Dobbyn on a breakaway to tie the game. The game remained tied at halftime until UM took the lead six minutes into the second half on a goal by Therese Heaton. Michigan held the 2-1 lead for more than 23 minutes before Covington tied the game to give NU new life.

Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) once again led NU with nine shots, six on goal. Tabitha Lowey (Sr., Peachtree City, Ga./Mcintosh) also had three shots denied by UM keeper Megan Tuura who had nine saves on the night. Jones had three saves for the Wildcats.

Head coach Jenny Haigh and the Wildcats head to East Lansing, Mich. Sunday for a Big Ten showdown with the Spartans. Game time is slated for 11 a.m. CT.
