ANN ARBOR, Mich -- Northwestern had five players compete in the first round of main-draw singles play at the 2005 Midwest Regional Championships.
Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) advanced to the round of 16 for the Wildcats. Tempke won his first match over Indiana's Mike McCarthy, 6-0, 7-6 (7). Tempke then won his second match of the day, topping Ohio State's Dennis Mertens, 6-4, 6-3.
Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) won his first match against Western Michigan's Brady Crosby, 6-4, 6-3. Schaechterle dropped his second round match to Ohio State's Devin Mullings, 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Marc Dwyer (Peachtree, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independant High School) also won his first round match, a 7-6 (4), 6-2 decision over Ohio State's Drew Eberly. Dwyer fell to Illinois' Ruben Gonzales in the second round, 6-2, 6-2.
Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) started his singles play out with a win over Ball State's Joe Epkey, 6-2, 6-3. Lock then fell to Ohio State's Bryan Koniecko in the second round, 6-3, 6-2.
Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) won his first-round match against Indiana's Patrick Buchanan, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Christian dropped his second-round match to Western Michigan's Jose Orozco, 6-3, 6-4.
