EVANSTON, Ill.-- Northwestern's women's soccer team (7-4-1, 0-3-1) dropped another tough match, 1-0, to the visiting Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-4-2, 3-1-0) Sunday at the Thomas Athletic Complex.

The Wildcats had plenty of scoring opportunities, showering the Minnesota defense with 26 shots and nine corners, but were never able to get a shot past goalkeeper Molly Schneider who had nine saves on the day.

"It's the little things that make a big difference," head coach Jenny Haigh said. "I think in the last 20 minutes we did of the little things. We didn't do it for 90 minutes and because of that we didn't put away some of our opportunities. I think we took for granted that because we got so many shots that a goal would come. We just looked a little more hungry in the last 15 minutes of the game instead of the entire 90 minutes.

"We're a good team and I think we're getting outworked in stretches of games. We just need to fix that and sharpen up on some of those things."

NU goalkeeper Whitney Jones (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) made a tremendous save early in the second half to keep the game tied at 0-0. Minnesota's Becky Dellaria broke away from the pack and with a defender right on her side, had her shot smothered by Jones 15 feet in front of the goal.

But after most of the second half was played on Minnesota's side of the field, the Gophers took advantage of a rare scoring opportunity of their own when Lindsey Schwartz fed Dellaria on a break away once again and this time capitalized with a shot past Jones into the right side of the goal in the 76th minute.

From there, the Wildcats tried desperately to tie the game with a flurry of shots, but were unsuccessful. Two NU shots hit the cross bar and one bounced off the left post in the first.

Sophomore Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) led Northwestern with nine shots, four of which were turned away by Schneider.

The Wildcats hit the road next weekend when they take on Michigan at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 in Ann Arbor and Michigan State at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 9 in East Lansing, Mich.
