JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- Junior David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) continued his outstanding play this fall, finishing 12th at the high-powered Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges Sunday afternoon. Eleven of the 15 teams entered this weekend's action ranked in the nation's top 50.
Merkow finished the three rounds with a 2-over 218 (72-70-76), good enough for a 12th-place tie. He now has a first-, 12th- and 12th-place showing in his last three tournaments.
As a team, the 15th-ranked Wildcats finished 10th with Florida State. Northwestern (303-292-295=890) did finish a stroke ahead of 11th-ranked Wake Forest and five in front of Oklahoma. South Carolina, ranked 78th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, won the eighth annual event by eight strokes over 32nd-ranked Auburn.
Senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) placed 35th with an 8-over 224 (77-72-75). Sophomore Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) turned in the Wildcats' best Sunday round with a 1-under 71 to finish 51st (81-74-71=226).
Sophomore Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) and junior Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) both placed 60th with 12-over 228's.
The Wildcats take a short break this week before playing their final fall event in San Martin, Calif., at the CordeValle Classic on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
