EVANSTON, Ill.-- Lauren Sesselman's goal in the 102nd minute broke a 1-1 tie in double overtime and lifted the Purdue Boilermakers to a 2-1 win today over the Northwestern Wildcats in front of a packed house at the Thomas Athletic Complex in Evanston.

The loss drops Northwestern to 8-7-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the Big Ten with two conference games remaining to try and clinch a spot in this year's Big Ten tournament. Purdue improves to 10-5-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the conference.

After falling behind 1-0 on an unassisted second half goal in the 63rd minute by Parrissa Eyorokon, Northwestern scratched and clawed its way back and finally tied the game with 3:34 left in regulation when Krystal Patterson (Fr., St. Louis, Mo./Shiloh) found Jeanette Lorme (Fr., Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) on the right side who fired the ball across into the upper left-hand corner of the goal.

The goal for Lorme was her fourth of the season. She has recorded at least one point in the last four games in goal or assist fashion and in six of the eight Big Ten games.

"Jeanette is a complete soccer player," head coach Jenny Haigh said. "She defends really well and is very courageous. She wants it all and she goes for it when the game is on the line."

The two teams battled through a scoreless first overtime with neither team generating much offense with NU taking the only shot on goal in the period, nearly knocking the ball in off a corner play.

But Purdue ended the game quickly at the start of the second overtime when Rebecca Robison found Sesselman for the dramatic game-winning goal 1:24 into the period. Haigh said it was one of the few errors NU's defense made that allowed the goal to happen.

"We froze," Haigh said. "We didn't step to the ball. We stepped to the ball all game except for that one play. She got a clean shot off because of that.

"Overall I thought we played great. We stayed organized defensively and got great scoring chances. Seeing Jeanette create that goal out of nothing was great to see. We put a lot of pressure on them but unfortunately couldn't put away one of those corner opportunities we had earlier."

Despite the loss, goalkeeper Whitney Jones (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) played superb between the pipes, recording five saves and intercepting several Purdue corner kicks in front of the goal. Lauren Mason had a season-high seven saves for the Boilermakers.

Haigh added both Purdue goals were great plays and that there was little Jones could have done to stop them.

"Whitney played really well today," Haigh said. "Both were great goals and weren't mistakes on her part. I thought she got to everything that she should have."

Northwestern outshot the Boilers 19-13 and were victim of some great defensive plays in goal by Mason. NU also missed a great scoring chance when Kelsey Hans (So., Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) fired a shot that deflected off the right post midway through the second period.

Northwestern is back in action at home next weekend when they take on Ohio State at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 and Loyola at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. The Wildcats then wrap-up the regular season against Wisconsin at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.

"We have to win these next two games," Haigh said. "Both Ohio State and Wisconsin are in the same boat that we are and we're all going to be urgent for a win. They should be some really competitive games."
