Three Wildcats Win Two at Big Ten Singles Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - Seniors Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) and junior Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) each won a pair of matches Saturday in the main draw of the Big Ten Singles Championships.
Hanus -- the No. 8 seed -- defeated Robinson of Purdue 6-4, 7-6 before taking down Kantar of Minnesota 6-4, 6-4. Perrin won both of his matches in straight sets as well, beating Fischer of Michigan 6-2, 6-4 and Osorio of Minnesota 7-6, 6-3. Schaechterle defeated Gossain of Michigan 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 and Sonkin of Wisconsin 7-6, 7-5.
With the wins, the trio advances to the round of 16 set to compete Sunday, Nov. 14.
Junior Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) notched a victory in his first-round match Saturday as well, defeating Malempati of Iowa 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Lock fell in the round of 32 though to Ticer of Minnesota 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) dropped his opening-round match to Dwyer of Penn State 6-4, 7-6, 7-5.
After advancing to the main draw on the strength of two victories in the qualifying rounds, sophomore Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) fell to Atas of Ohio State 5-7, 5-7, 2-6.
