EVANSTON, Ill. -- On the heels of Friday's four point loss to Purdue, No. 14 Northwestern again fought a tough dual opponent in No. 17 Wisconsin, coming out on top this time, 130-113, in another meet that went down to the wire.
With the final score still very much in doubt heading into the 100 free, freshman Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) delivered a first place finish in 45.18 while classmate David Kormushoff (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) came in third against Wisconsin's top two sprint freestylers to give the Wildcats the lead.
Senior Louis Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West) gave NU even more of a cushion by winning the 200 breast in 2:05.02 -- more than four seconds in front of the second-place finisher.
Northwestern needed only to finish second or better in the final event, the 200 free relay, and its team of Bubolz, Kormushoff, Matt Wever (Boise, Idaho/Boise) and Ben Dexter (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) won the event to give the Wildcats the dual meet victory.
"This meet could have gone either way," NU head coach Bob Groseth said. "Kyle and David gave us great performances in the 100 free and we thought Louis could win the 200 breast and he did. It was also big that we took first and third in both diving events."
Junior Mike Oxman (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) took first on the 3-meter board and third on the 1-meter while freshman Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) earned first on the 1-meter and third on the 3-meter.
Sophomore Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) won both the 50 free and the 200 back for the Wildcats.
NU returns to action next weekend when it hosts the TYR NU Invitational.
