EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern (7-13, 2-8 Big Ten) battled back after dropping its first two games against Michigan State (7-11, 2-8) Saturday night, but the `Cats could not complete the comeback and fell 3-1 (24-30, 27-30, 30-26, 25-30).
Michigan State's Kim Schram pounded eight kills in game one, overwhelming the `Cats defense as the Spartans charged to a 24-30 win.
Sophomore Julie Purcell (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) came into game two and gave the `Cats a consistent threat on offense with seven kills and a .357 hitting percentage. But the Spartans offense was too strong, as they won 30-27.
In game three, the `Cats got out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, breathing new life into their chances with a 30-27 win.
Schram proved to be the story of the night though, as her team-leading 29 kills landed the Spartans their second conference victory.
Senior co-captain Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) notched her sixth-straight double-double for the 'Cats with 55 assists and 10 digs.
