Northwestern Tripped By Michigan State, 4-3

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Northwestern fell just shy of knocking off Michigan State on Friday in East Lansing. The Wildcats led in two of the doubles matches, but the Spartans seized the momentum in the No. 3 match. With the scored tied at six, the Spartans' Andy Formanczyk and Chris Mitchell broke the serve of Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine). The MSU duo went on to win, 8-6, for the first point of the match and held serve in singles play, winning three matches to stave off NU, 4-3.
Senior Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y. Walt Whitman) recorded his fourth straight conference win, downing Cameron Marshall 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Axler is 16-15 overall and a team-best 5-4 in the Big Ten.
Jenkins and Schaechterle also each won their singles matches. Jenkins upended Mitchell 6-3, 7-6 (13) at No. 2, and Schaechterle knocked off Jimmy McGuire 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
The Spartans clinched the match when Formanczyk outlasted sophomore Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.
With the loss, NU fell to 10-10 overall and 3-6 in the Big Ten. NU returns to action at noon Saturday at Michigan.
