ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Northwestern's road trip to Michigan turned out to be a tough one, as it dropped its second match in as many days in the state. NU took the doubles point, but host Michigan won four of six in singles play en route a 4-3 win. With the loss, NU fell to 10-11 overall and 3-7 in the Big Ten.
The Wildcats gained the early advantage with a win at No. 1 doubles, as Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) overtook Chris Rolf and Vinny Gossain, 8-3. Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win against Anthony Jackson and Josef Fischer at No. 3.
After the Wolverines notched the first two wins in singles play, the Wildcats responded with two straight victories of their own to take a 3-2 lead. Senior Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) posted a 6-4, 6-0 win against Chris Shaya at No. 3, and Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) defeated Gossain 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6.
