RIO MAR, P.R. -- Northwestern's 13th-ranked men's golf team improved upon its day one showing by three strokes and now sits in eighth place at the NCAA Puerto Rico Classic. The tournament field is one of the strongest in the country, featuring eight of the top 15 teams in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index.
The gusty winds that dominated Sunday's storylines diminished on Monday and allowed all but one team (East Tennessee State) to post lower scores in the second round.
The Wildcats own a two-day score of 597 (300-297), which is 23 strokes behind tournament leader N.C. State. Minnesota is in second place, trailing the Wolfpack by three strokes.
Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) fired the Wildcats' best round Monday, shooting an even par 72. He climbed to 28th place (77-72=149) in the individual standings. Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Carlforsska Gymnasiet) turned in a 2-over 74, but leads all NU players after two days with a 3-over 147 (73-74). He is tied for 16th place.
Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena), a freshman, fired a 1-over 73 and is now in 39th place (78-73=151). Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit), who is coming off his individual title at the Rice Intercollegiate, is in 51st place with an 8-over 153 (75-78).
The third and final round begins at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
