ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) made it as far as the quarterfinals before being eliminated from the main draw of the Big Ten Singles Championship.
Tempke, a freshman and one of only two NU players remaining in the main draw, breezed by Wisconsin's David Hippee 6-3, 6-2 in this morning's Round of 16 before falling to Michigan's top-seeded Michael Rubin 7-6 (5), 6-4.
"Christian did a great job this weekend," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "He lost a close match to the No. 1 seed, and with his performance, I think he established himself to a degree in the Big Ten Conference."
The other Wildcat playing in the main draw was No. 3 seed Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), who lost in the Round of 16 to Michigan State's Cameron Marshall 6-1, 6-4.
"Tommy did not play like he is capable of playing," said Torricelli. "But I know he will bounce back."
On a somewhat lighter note, Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) beat Iowa's Aaron Schaechterle 6-4, 6-2, edged Ohio State's Ross Wilson 6-4, 6-3, then got a win by default over Purdue's David Robinson to advance to the second round-consolation bracket final. Perrin will play either Indiana's Ryan Recht or Penn State's Mark Barry tomorrow.
Also having success was Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College), who outlasted Michigan's Vinny Gossain 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the 7-9 draw semifinals before knocking out Michigan's Josef Fischer 6-1, 7-5 to take the championship. (Lock was mistakenly reported by Michigan yesterday as playing Fischer in the quarterfinals, where he actually beat Purdue's Jarred Leibner 6-4, 6-2.)
In other results, Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) whipped Iowa's Ryan Reid 6-1, 6-2, but then lost to Penn State's Ryan Berger 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round-consolation bracket. In that same draw, Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) fell to Ohio State's Scott Green 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7). Meanwhile, Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) got a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Iowa's Chaitu Malempati in the second-round consolation bracket, but he was then beaten 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 by Robinson.
Monday marks the final day of competition at the tournament.
