SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--Northwestern's men's tennis team had no problems in the high altitudes.
One day after knocking down Weber State 7-0, the Wildcats put together a 6-1 win over host Utah (0-1) to improve to 2-0 this season.
"I am pleased with how the guys stepped up," said head coach Paul Torricelli. "They all competed very well. The match was a battle and much closer than the score indicated. The team did a great job adjusting to the high altitude."
Leading the way for the 'Cats was junior Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School), who outlasted Roeland Brateanu 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 at No. 1. The win boosted Perrin's record to 12-4 this year.
"Chuck had a gutsy effort tonight," said Torricelli. "One never gets an easy match at No. 1, and he handled himself well at the position."
Freshman Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbr?gge) added a solid performance, topping Jason Yap 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. Also, junior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) put forth a 6-3, 6-4 effort over Tomasz Grzyb at No. 2.
In doubles, Perrin and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) led the way with an 8-6 nipping of Brateanu and Miron Mann. Meanwhile, teammates Hanus and Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) threw in an 8-4 win over Grzyb and Jason Yap.
The Wildcats head to Minneapolis to take on Virginia at noon on Saturday and Minnesota at noon on Sunday.
