EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) were the last remaining Wildcats at the ITA Midwest Championships at Michigan State, but they both lost in the Round of 16 to conclude NU play at the six-day tournament.
Hanus, seeded 10th, took Michigan State's Chris Mitchell in a 6-4, 6-4, straight-set win Sunday morning. Hanus' next match proved to be more difficult, as he lost to Illinois' second-seeded Mike Calkins 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Perrin fought back after dropping the first set to beat Louisville's Octavian Nicodim 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3. The junior was not as fortunate in his second match, though, falling to Western Michigan's ninth-seeded Ravi Pathanjali 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge), the other Wildcat singles competitor, was nipped by Purdue's Paul Rose 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5).
Northwestern will return to action Nov. 15, when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Big Ten Singles Championships.
