EVANSTON, Ill. - After gaining a tie with 23rd-ranked Utah on Thursday in Salt Lake City, the Northwestern women's soccer team was looking forward to its match with No. 24 Brigham Young Saturday night in Provo.

That excitement was well met through the first half, although the Cougars broke onto the board in the 24th minute to end NU's regular-season shutout streak at a staggering 614:08.

The second half was a completely different tale, though, as BYU scored four goals in a 16-minute span to effectively put the match out of reach. As a result, the Cougars improved to 2-2, while NU fell to 1-1-1.

In the 23rd minute, senior Jeni Willardson-Viernes started the scoring for the Cougars after receiving an assist from midfielder Krissa Campbell. Viernes sprinted with the ball down the right side of the field, breaking away from an NU defender and drawing goalkeeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) out before putting the ball in the left corner of the net.

Viernes got into the act again in the second half, feeding the ball to sophomore Aydre Soffe who one-timed the pass beyond McCreery to score her first goal of the season at 53:43.

The Wildcats were their own worst enemy at that point, scoring two own goals which made the score 4-0. In both cases, Jennifer Fielding was credited with the goal for BYU. The scoring concluded in the 69th minute, when Bowman took a pass from freshman Brooke Thulin and delivered into the right side of the net.

McCreery, who set a personal best with nine saves vs. Utah, came up with seven more Saturday night. For Brigham Young, Mandy Gott and Ashley Smith combined for three stops.

Northwestern is back in action this coming weekend when they travel to Kentucky to face Louisville (Friday, Sept. 13) and Kentucky (Sunday, Sept. 15).
