CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Northwestern women's soccer team fell to Illinois, 3-1, in Big Ten action Sunday afternoon at Illini Field.
The Wildcats fall to 3-5-1 overall (1-3 Big Ten). Illinois, which knocked off nationally ranked Dayton Friday night, improved to 5-5 (1-2 Big Ten).
"We did not come out to play a competitive match today," said head coach Jenny Haigh. "We needed to play with urgency and we didn't. We put a lot of pressure on Illinois in the last 10-15 minutes of the match, but by then it was too late. We needed to come out strong from the start. They did, and that's why they got the win."
The Illini indeed wasted no time getting out of the box, scoring in the 16th minute when Hollie Schurr sent a through-ball to Tara Hurless for a breakaway.
Twenty minutes later, Laura Redmond made the score 2-0 when she fired home a 15-yard shot after receiving a leading pass from Kelly Campbell.
In the second half, Paula Faherty iced the match for Illinois with an unassisted goal in the 67th minute.
Northwestern responded late with a goal of its own. Sophomore Carolyn Hack (Downers Grove, Ill./North) headed home a ball from Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) for her first score of the season.
Anne Helm (Newton, Mass./Newton North) was in the goal for Northwestern and came up with seven saves. At the other end, Rachel Frank had five stops for the Illini, which was playing the match without its normal starting goalkeeper, Leisha Alcia. She is with the Canadian National Team preparing for World Cup 2003 qualifying.
Northwestern is on the road again next week but remains in the Big Ten. The Wildcats will be at Purdue Friday afternoon, then meet Indiana on Sunday in Bloomington.
